South Australia - State G1 Drift Mallala Motorpsort
Team Wheelworx rise to the top at G1in AdelaideTeam Wheelworx has kept the momentum from the recent Drift Australia round in Tasmaniaputting forth some excellent performances at the recent G1, Round 1 State DriftChampionships at Mallala Motorsport Park in South Australia.
Three of the five Team WheelWorx members qualified into the Top 16 Group 1 category.Leading the charge was Adam ‘Mayhem’ May who qualified an incredible 2nd position, followedclosely by Paul ‘Aussie’ Austin who qualified 3rd. Team WheelWorx young gun, Stewart ‘Furbinator’ Furze also qualfied strongly driving the wheels off his GTR R32 Skyline to a claim a solid 16th place.
In the battles it was a gas’n’go session as the Tarmac Army marched towards the podium.Firing the big shots was Paul Austin, who eliminated Ryan Bishop and James Mardle beforethe dreaded double draw played its hand against the team for the second time this season.
The double draw was against equally hard charging Adam May, who disposed of Matt Hudsonand Adam Dermody, only to draw Austin in the semi-finals. Both drivers went out hard, but after anear collision due to the extremely close proximity, Austin was deemed to be the man to progress through to the grand final.
Austin drew the favorite for the event, Leighton ‘Crabman’ Fine, and pushed the Round 1 Drift Australia winner right to the very end. A re-run was called to separate the pair, and eventually Leighton took the win by the narrowest margin.
Leighton was quick to comment that Austin’s competition was some of the fiercest he has encountered yet, confirming Paul’s standing as one of Australia’s best drivers.
“That was a great last battle”, smiled Paul ‘Aussie’ Austin, “the car was spot on, and Leighton Fine was a worthy opponent.
The set up on the Team Wheelworx Onviea is almost complete, and if we can go toe to toe with Leighton, well we know we are doing things correctly. I can’t wait for the next round of DA”.
